‘Rat Kebab’ underlines Thuring’s challenging style within her work. It is an example of Thuring being inspired by new ideas and directions.
The idea of the rat as ‘the only free animal in the city’ and ‘the only one who can spread the plague’ is an idea from street artist Blek le Rat (b.1952). Taking this idea into account, this sculptural piece by Thuring could be focusing on the idea that the rat is identified as a pest. Contrastingly, on the other hand the rat was portrayed as a symbol of good luck in old Japan.
