This work is part of a series of copper surfaces that Beshty utilizes as ‘ready-mades’ in order to explore the ways in which objects produce meaning through their placement and circulation in the world. This includes all facets; past, present, current and the possible. To create the markings on this particular piece, Mark Hix threw a party using the copper table top. The intention was for Mark’s guests to non-purposely generate damage to piece which together appear as interesting gestures.
The piece implies movements taken by the guests throughout the evening. It commemorates the event in a unique way in that it has been created by the guests and defined by time and place of particular objects. In this sense, Beshty has discovered an interesting method of exploring the past in relation to the imprints that particular objects (or even humans) leave on the world.
