Painting is the most magical of mediums. The transcendence is truly amazing to me every time I go to a museum and I see how somebody figured another way to rub coloured dirt on a flat surface and make space where there is no space or make you think of a life experience. – Chuck Close
Painting Now unites the work of six contemporary painters, each style individually unique yet all somehow characterise our paradoxical cultural attitudes at this unsettled moment in time.
Timelessness manifests itself in painting, our most- ancient, yet enduring art form. Painting as a physical practice has been constantly reworked, rebuilt, and reimagined such that these contemporary works don’t necessarily represent through style, content, or medium, the time from which they come, yet all do just by their existence.
Though not linked through their content, approaches, or styles, all the artists use the painted surface as a map on which concepts and genres interweave, renew, and collide.
The uniting of these vastly contrasting paintings is a visual reflection of our tumultuous moment in time, unable to be pinned down, consistently inconsistent. Frightening and wonderful.
